The Government of Belize, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, launched the Marine Spatial Planning process on October 19th, 2022.
Will ensuring that productive fisheries habitats or ecosystems are identified to be effectively managed to benefit a healthy fishing.
Will consider coastal activities to allow balancing development, conservation and management needed to maintain healthy coasts and oceans.
Will consider the location of deep-water channels and shipping lanes, as well as the manoeuvring of ships and other navigation concerns to ensure that the shipping and transportation sector can continue to operate efficiently while minimizing negative impacts on the marine environment.
Will define an optimal distribution of tourism activities within the ocean space to ensure the long-term viability of the industry and maintain the healthy ecosystems upon which the industry depends.
Can help to identify best locations for mariculture operations that minimize environmental impacts, promotes sustainable practices and supports restorative functions.
Can inform Belize's transition towards a low-carbon economy and increase energy security by identifying areas within Belize’s ocean space that are suitable for renewable energy development and considers impacts on marine ecosystems and the needs of coastal communities.
