Ocean Use Survey Launched to Shape the Future of Belize’s Ocean Management
November 21st and 24th, 2023 – Members from the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) team, Mr. Chad Bowman, MSP Science Lead, and Mr. Delwin Guevara, GIS and Spatial Analyst, announced the commencement of the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan (BSOP) Ocean Use Survey (OUS) during appearances on local media morning shows included Love Morning Show and Open Your Eyes. The survey aims to gather vital public input to guide the BSOP process. The OUS seeks to highlight the importance of public participation in shaping the BSOP. Emphasizing diverse voices in decision-making, the survey aims to inform sustainable ocean use strategies that balance ecological, economic, and social goals. Public input is essential for understanding the value of different ocean areas and ensuring that zoning designs support local needs. The Survey findings will inform policies and regulations governing ocean use and conservation, subject to public consultations.
Survey Significance, Target, and Timeline:
The OUS promotes active participation, ensuring the BSOP aligns with the needs of Belize’s ocean users through stakeholder planning and monitoring. The survey targets 27 coastal communities, including islands on Belize’s reef and offshore atolls. Key ocean user groups include indigenous groups, licensed fisherfolk, tour guides, landowners, and port operators. The survey is expected to run from November 2023 to January 2024, through three phases of consultations and mapping exercises.
Introduction of SeaSketch: SeaSketch is a user-friendly decision support platform crucial for the BSOP. Its features include:
- User-Friendly Interface: Enables broad stakeholder participation.
- Real-Time Collaboration: Facilitates joint planning and mapping.
- Data Visualization: Helps stakeholders design marine spatial plans and biodiversity protection areas.
By participating in the OUS, the public can contribute to the sustainable management and protection of Belize’s ocean resources for future generations.
